How to describe a person in very easy method

Think about someone who you know well, could be someone in your family, your friends, someone you work with or someone else.
  • How would you describe that person?
  • What does that person look like?
  • What kind of personality does this person have?
Describing a person is usual in many situation including speaking test like EILTS speaking test or many other places. In this lesson you learn how to describe a person in detail using clear, natural English. Listen to this lesson and practice so you need to think of someone you are going to describe. It can be anyone you know well.
Let's start

Describing Appearance
  • What is he or she look like?
  • What can you say when you describe a person?
You can talk about a person's height and build.
Ex-
  • My brother is tall and well built.
  • My girlfriend Priyanka is medium height and slim
  • Anand, who I work with, is short and overweight.
Do you know what well built means? Well-built means- Someone who is well-built, is broad and strong with big mussels .
You can also add adverb to make your sentence more precise like-
  • My brother is quite tall and well built.
  • My girlfriend Priyanka is medium height and really slim.
  • Anand, who I work with, is short and little overweight.
Then may be add something about a person's hair.

Describing Hair
  • He has short, brown hair but he is going bald fast.
  • She has long, dark blonde hair.
  • He has curly, fair hair.
Finally, what else can you say about a person's appearance.
Imagine you are describing a person to me & you want me to be able to recognize this person from your description. What could you say?
There are many possibilities of course but there are few suggestions:
  • He looks a bit like younger version of Vin Diesel.
  • She is really beautiful, with very striking features.
  • He has a long scar on his right elbow.
Do you know what striking features means?
In this context, feature refers to someone's facestriking means that you can't help noticing something. So if someone has striking features means he or she has a unusual and attractive face.
What about Scar ? scars are left over when you cut deep cut or have an operation. OK, so now you should be able to use three sentences about a person you are describing.
Like this-
My brother is quite tall and well built, he has a short brown hair, but he is going bald fast. He looks a bit like a younger version of Vin Diesel.
Now your turn, Pause the audio and make three sentences about the person you are describing, remember "Height,Built and Hair", then general appearance.
Could you do this? OK great job!
So this was the initial stage but of course we have more things that we can add further.
